A100 vs H100 Water-Cooling Planning: Workstation, Test Bench, or Rack?
Share
The same loop diagram can hide three different projects
An A100 or H100 water-cooling plan can look simple on paper: block, pump, radiator, reservoir, tubing. The physical project changes sharply depending on where the card will run.
In a workstation, the priorities are slot spacing, radiator mounting, side-panel clearance, and a clean way to remove the card. On an open test bench, mounting and spill control become more important because there may be no case structure to support the block and tubing. In a rack environment, the existing server airflow, service procedure, and platform restrictions can outweigh the convenience of a desktop-style loop.
PCIe is the practical dividing line
Before comparing cooling capacity, identify PCIe versus SXM. FormulaMod’s H100/H800 block and A100/CMP 170HX/A30 block pages are separate product families for a reason: the card interface and mounting details are part of the product.
For either card, verify the exact board, memory and VRM coverage, mounting hardware, port location, and backplate clearance. Then draw the route in the intended chassis. A port that looks perfect in a product photo may point straight into a fan, side panel, or neighboring card.
Plan for the long job, not the first boot
AI workloads can run long enough for a small layout problem to become a real maintenance problem. Provide radiator headroom, keep the reservoir accessible, and include a drain or disconnect strategy. Watch coolant temperature and fan behavior during a sustained workload rather than judging the loop only by an idle screenshot.
The right comparison is not “which GPU is hotter?” It is “which platform, card, and workload am I actually building around?” That question produces a much more reliable shopping list.
Frequently Asked Questions / FAQ
Can an A100 and H100 use the same water-cooling plan?
They can share planning principles, but the physical block, platform, power, port layout, and mounting requirements still depend on the exact card.
Can a PCIe block be used on an SXM module?
No. PCIe and SXM are different physical and platform routes. Confirm the form factor before choosing the block or loop layout.
What should be checked before planning the loop?
Check the board, memory and VRM coverage, mounting hardware, port direction, backplate clearance, slot spacing, and service access in the intended chassis.
