FormulaMod GPU Water Block Buying Checklist

Use this before you order

Buying a GPU water block is not like buying a case fan. Close enough is not good enough.

Use this checklist before placing an order, especially if the card is expensive, rare, used, or part of a workstation build.

1. Exact GPU model

Write down the full model name.

Bad:

· RTX 4090

· RTX 5090

· RX 7900 XTX

Better:

· ASUS TUF Gaming GeForce RTX 4090 OC

· MSI GeForce RTX 4090 Suprim X

· Gigabyte AORUS GeForce RTX 5090 Master

The longer model name is annoying, but it is useful.

2. PCB compatibility

Check that the block product page names your exact card. If it does not, ask before buying.

Do not assume:

· Same GPU means same block

· Same brand means same PCB

· Similar cooler means same layout

· Founders Edition means reference for every card

3. Backplate choice

Some blocks include a passive backplate. Some have active backplate options.

Ask:

· Does my card need rear-side cooling?

· Is active backplate worth the cost?

· Will it fit in my case?

· Does it affect slot spacing?

4. Terminal and fittings

Most blocks use G1/4 ports, but the tube side still matters.

Choose:

· Hard tube or soft tube

· Tube size

· Straight fittings

· Angled fittings

· Drain valve

· Stop plugs

If you are unsure, plan the loop on paper before buying fittings.

5. Radiator capacity

A water block moves heat from the GPU to the loop. The radiator still has to dump that heat into the air.

For high-power GPUs:

· 360mm can work, but may need higher fan speed

· 480mm gives more comfort

· Dual radiators are better for quiet workstations

· Multi-GPU systems need serious planning

6. Pump and reservoir

A D5 pump/reservoir combo is a common safe choice for many desktop loops. DDC pumps can be useful where space is limited, but they may run warmer or louder depending on setup.

For AI workstations, quiet reliability matters more than squeezing every part into the smallest space.

7. Maintenance access

Before you build, ask:

· Where is the drain port?

· Can I fill the reservoir easily?

· Can I remove the GPU later?

· Can I reach the fittings?

· Will the loop be serviceable after six months?

Many beautiful loops are annoying to maintain. Do not build yourself into a corner.
