RTX 5090 Thermal Pads Putty and PTM7950: Choosing the Right Interface
Share
Thermal interface material is one of the most discussed parts of RTX 5090 water-block installation because different areas of the board have different gap heights. A thin interface for the GPU die cannot be substituted for a thicker pad on memory or a conformable putty around uneven power components.
The GPU core needs a thin, even interface
The core interface should follow the block instructions and the chosen material specification. The goal is a uniform imprint across the die, not maximum thickness. PTM7950 and thermal paste are both used for this kind of very small, controlled gap, but they require clean surfaces and correct handling.
Memory and VRM gaps are different
Memory packages and power components can sit at different heights. A pad map may use several thicknesses, while putty can conform to uneven areas when the block design allows it. Putty is not a universal substitute: it still needs the right compression, clearance, and non-conductive placement.
Why idle readings can be misleading
A card can show acceptable idle temperatures while a memory or VRM interface fails during a long load. Contact pressure changes the result. Test under a repeatable workload and record core, hotspot when available, memory, board power, coolant, and ambient temperature together.
A material decision should be reversible
Keep the original pads and document every thickness before changing the interface. Avoid liquid metal unless the block, surface materials, insulation, and warranty implications are fully understood. A water block conversion should reduce uncertainty, not add a new conductive-risk path.
FAQ
Q: Can thermal putty replace every RTX 5090 thermal pad?
A: No. It may suit selected uneven areas, but the block documentation and clearance still control the correct interface.
Q: Is PTM7950 a substitute for memory pads?
A: Usually no. PTM7950 is commonly considered for a controlled core interface, while memory and VRM areas need their specified gap-filling material.
Q: Why can memory be fine at idle and high under load?
A: Idle load may not create enough heat or pressure sensitivity to reveal a poor memory interface. Sustained load exposes the contact problem.
